Clinical Benefits
Nutritional demands increase in response to maternal and foetal changes throughout preconception, pregnancy and lactation. Iodine is critical for maternal thyroid health, foetal brain and central nervous system development,1,2 and is a common deficiency in pregnancy. This is evident by a study of 802 pregnant women with urinary levels indicative of iodine deficiency.3 Low levels of iron have also been linked to low birth weight and premature birth,4 while vitamin C requirements increase due to the larger blood volume in the mother and the unborn baby, which is implicated in blood vessel health.5
Both lutein and choline are increasingly being understood for their role in foetal health. Lutein, the predominant carotenoid in the infant brain, plays a key role as an antioxidant and in the development of vision, the brain and the nervous system.6,7 Carotenoid status of newborns and infants often depends on the nutritional status of the mother as well as the infant feeding method, with a deficiency indicating the need for supplementation.8 Choline is also important for foetal brain and central nervous system development.9,10,11 Studies have shown choline intake is insufficient in pregnant women,12 while common genetic variants may increase requirements for choline beyond current recommendations.13,14
Pregnancy Care Advanced is a low excipient, vegan-friendly formula that contains bioavailable minerals and activated B vitamins. This formula features active B vitamins including B6, B12 and 5-MTHF for enhanced bioavailability. This formula also contains the highly absorbable bisglycinate forms of Meta Zn® (Zinc) and Meta Fe® (Iron), which are bound to the amino acid glycine for efficient uptake, minimising risk of side effects, such as constipation and/or nausea.
